Autumn/Winter 2022 program

NGV also announced the upcoming Autumn/Winter 2022 program including an exciting mix of exhibitions, programs, festivals and events. Highlights of the upcoming season include the establishment of a new permanent home on the ground floor of NGV Australia for our NGV Collection of Indigenous Art and Design, which will change the way visitors experience this world-leading work. Opening on 15 April,
WHO ARE YOU: Australian Portraiture opening 25 March unites collections of the NGV and the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, for the very first time. Featuring more than 200 works by the likes of Patricia Piccinini, Howard Arkley, Vincent Namatjira and more, and depicting sitters such as Cate Blanchett, Queen Elizabeth II and Eddie Mabo, this exhibition will be one of the largest presentations of portraiture ever mounted in Australia.

Queer: Stories from the NGV Collection is a celebration of the queer stories embedded in the NGV Collection – and is one of the most historically expansive exhibitions ever dedicated to this diverse subject opening March 10.

Melbourne Design Week 2022 Australia’s leading annual international design event, returns for its sixth edition from 17–27 March 2022, a key highlight this year will be the inaugural Melbourne Design Fair (16 – 20 March 2022), a commercial showcase of limited edition, rare and one-of-a kind collectable design by Australia’s leading emerging and established contemporary designers and designer-makers.

New Australian Printmaking, an exhibition at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia opening 13 May, is the first presentation to feature all 68 prints created as part of this Fellowship and reveals the many ways in which the print medium can dynamically enhance the practice of leading contemporary artists.

For nearly three decades, the NGV’s annual Top Arts exhibition has provided a platform for our nation’s young artists to explore the themes and issues important to them. The exhibition, opening on 17 March, reveals that Victoria’s young artists are not only talented, but unwaveringly resilient. The NGV remains committed to arts education, as well as nurturing the practices of emerging artists.

Transforming Worlds: Change and Tradition in Contemporary India, opening on 9 April, explores how artists from Indigenous and regional communities are using customary art-making practices to comment on the country’s rapidly changing social, political and environmental landscapes. Featuring never-before-seen new acquisitions from the NGV Collection, this exhibition provides a local perspective on the experience of urbanisation, environmental degradation, shifting gender dynamics and public health issues in India.
